Attenuator fences are designed as a passive rockfall mitigation method that typically utilize high energy posts and supporting infrastructure.
They provide lower load rating for foundation and anchors which in turn extend the longevity of the system.
These systems are seen at road level, mid-slope, or top of slope and/or in gullies and rock laden valleys.
The rockfalls are disrupted and attenuated by the fence and guided down by the tail drape of the fence to the toe of the slope where it is easily cleaned up and discarded.
Barrier fences are also installed on foundations but these are non-passive measures that contain rockfall behind the fence where the roadway and toe-of-slope cannot facilitate major rockfalls.
